O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 round. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by jury. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for lowest 3 and the bottom 2. The judges were shocked by the outcome and urged viewers to show support for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
