O'Grady is the daughter of Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as a financial advisor. She was raised in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. Prior to shifting into Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. O'Grady's career began as model and actress for commercials in Montgomery Ward. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring character on ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
